Five Similarities Between Religion and Spirituality

When we were little we were asked, which came first, the chicken or the egg? If we base our answer on the biblical story of creation, we will answer, chicken. But if we answer based on our experience in raising chickens, our answer would be, eggs.

The answer to the same question can be said, which came first, religion or spirituality?

In terms of our experience in religious books and discussions, religion came first. It is only now that more and more people are talking about spirituality and writing about it. In terms of the origin of reality or the object of our understanding behind that word, spirituality has come first. There was a soul before any religion. Worship God was none other than His worship.

We can even say that spirituality is a branch of religion. People have been talking about religion for centuries. Some of them were fiercely opposed to their own religion. For centuries, Christians opposed paganism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other religions. This has happened to the rest in the case of paganism, Islam, and other religions. They also opposed other religions.

Religion vs. Spirituality: The Difference Between Them

But more and more people are discovering that religion alone cannot answer their deepest desires for a better life experience. Therefore, they went back to something deeper and better than religion. They have found it in spirituality.

Since spirituality is a part of religion in one sense, there must be some similarities between them, such as similarities between eggs and chickens.

First, they both deal with their confidence as they choose to embark on their play activities. Religion God believes in God the Father or Jesus, or Allah, or Brahman, or so. Spirituality believes in this God or it can hold God as a universal or primordial force. Both believe that such an entity possesses a higher and greater power than we have.

Second, both religion and spirituality seek to establish a relationship with this higher power. Although the type of relationship is different in religion than in spirituality, there is an aspiration for this relationship. Religion is associated with fear and trembling with this high power. Spirituality is associated with love and affection with this higher power.

Third, both religion and spirituality have rituals and practices that deepen one’s religiosity or spirituality. Religions usually have sacred rites or religious ceremonies. There are meditation or yoga sessions on spirituality.

Fourth, both have respect for the sacred, the other worldly. It is not just respect for God. It is a respect for the reality that is beyond our senses and reason. When religion pushes this honor to its extreme, it turns into superstition. When spirituality pushes this honor to its extremes, it turns into religious spirituality.

Fifth, both have a fear of failure. In religion this failure is punished by the repetition of the fire or existence of hell or some other bad consequence. This failure in spirituality is the inability to realize one’s true worth or value and the destiny of a meaningless life. Hell, the repetition of existence, non-existence, meaninglessness is a form of punishment for failure in religion or spirituality.

What Exactly Are the Differences Between Religion and Spirituality?

I am 57 years old and I am writing this article to discuss the differences between religion and spirituality. I grew up in very I would consider it a religious home, and not necessarily spiritual. You see, as a child my parents required that we go to church twice on Sundays and also go to Wednesday night prayer meetings. Now I don’t necessarily think that was the worst thing for me, but as I look back on it, I have often wondered why my parents were so strict in regards to church.

This has been a very difficult question for me to answer throughout my life. I experienced many things as a child while attending church and that created many questions in my mind regarding the validity of church and its benefits. When I reached high school age my parents decided after 25 years of marriage that they were going to call it quits. Now I know, that many kids go through divorces. I’m not writing this to whine about my situation, but I do believe that in my case this had a huge effect on my life and my current belief system.

This bitterness and resentment that I have towards organized religion grew out of watching and seeing the hypocrisy that I believe is rampant in many churches. My mom who was a Sunday school teacher throughout my childhood made a decision when I was in high school that she no longer wanted to be a part of the church or our family. She began to start drinking, which at the time was very puzzling to me. In fact my mom was the first person that took me to a bar at the age of 16 and I saw a lot of what I perceived at the time many happy people. This began a career of drinking for me, and at that time I loved it. Alcohol gave me the ability to overcome shyness and fear of talking to people in many other wonderful ways to overcome those feelings of inadequacy.

Now I know, without a doubt, I became an alcoholic immediately. I loved the effects of alcohol, and the false sense of courage that it gave me. Over the years, alcohol became my best friend. But in time, my best friend turned on me, and I was forced to face reality. Which turned out to be the best gift I could have received my life.

It took a number of years, for me to admit that I had a problem with alcohol. I became a father at a very young age and as a result, my alcoholism and selfishness created a lot of problems with my relationships with my daughters.

Today, as a result of my alcoholism, I have discovered many things about my life and my path of spirituality. I have been sober now for 19 ½ years and my life really could not be better. My alcoholism has given me the ability to seek spirituality instead of religion. I have tried recently to attend churches again thinking that would be the right thing for me to do. Every time I attend churches today I seem to have a feeling of inadequacy and all the old thoughts and feelings come right to the surface. I get frustrated with organized religion, I get frustrated with their requests for financial support, but most of all I get tired of them trying to convince people that they are bad and are going to hell.

Over my years of being in alcoholics anonymous I’ve heard many sayings and quotes that have helped me to realize the importance of spirituality. I heard a gentleman say one time ” churches for people who don’t want to go to hell, and alcoholics anonymous is for people who have already been there!” That made so much sense to me, and still does today. I thank God every day, that he loves me, and I am so grateful to be an alcoholic. I could not have received a better gift, as a human being.

Today I can look back on my life, and be truly grateful for every thing I have experienced. All of the good, all of the bad, has made me the person that I am today. I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love the fact that AA gave me the ability and opportunity to watch people turn their lives around and become productive members of society. It doesn’t matter if you are a Christian, Muslim, atheist, or an agnostic, AA gives you all of the tools you could ever need to get sober and save your life. This program is amazing. I love reading the history of the program. To think of what has been accomplished as a result of a stockbroker and a medical doctor having a meeting at a kitchen table in Akron, Ohio in the 1930’s is nothing short of a miracle. It’s a story of spirituality that has never been matched by any other organization.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this article, and if you have any questions or comments please visit my blog. I love the fact that I can share my experience, strength, and hope with others. In the past few months I have been introduced in to a guided meditation program that has changed my life. You see, AA is a 12 step program, and the 11th step of the program states “sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God” which to me, is without a doubt the most beautiful step of the whole program. Meditation to me is more important than food. This conscious contact with God that I am experiencing today is what I have been searching for all my life. It is taken many years for me to explore the possibility of meditating.

So, for me, spirituality is something that comes from within, and religion is what people seek on the outside. Religion, in my opinion is nothing

Life, Religion and Spirituality

Religion is for people who are scared to go to hell.
Spirituality is for people who have already been there.

~Bonnie Raitt~

Life is yours to live. Religion and spirituality help you make sense of your life and find your way. When was the last time you stopped to consider what your life is about? Why are you here? Children hear that they can be anything they want to be when they grow up. That is not quite true. Some paths require resources, money, skills or connections which might not be readily available to you. Your choices are not unlimited.

Yet many options are open to you. Your families, friends, circumstances and talents guide you toward certain paths. Those might be easier paths for you to follow. More challenging paths await you as well. These will require more effort from you but might be more satisfying in the long run.

If fame, fortune and power are what you crave, you have no need of religion or spirituality. You will pursue these goals at all costs regardless of the effect on your life and the lives of those you encounter on your way. It’s all about you.

Religion and spirituality are important to people who want their lives to be about something more than what they can grab for themselves. They form a context for living life directed toward a higher calling. When I was a child, a vocation was considered a call from God to pursue a higher purpose. Originally it meant being called to be a priest or a nun. Later it came to mean living any life in the context of a greater meaning.

How to find meaning outside yourself is not always obvious. Where do you start? What are the steps? Spirituality is the process of finding, accepting and sharing the meaning of being alive as you journey through life. You learn from others on the same path and share what you learn with your fellow travelers.

Religions are formalized systems for finding the meaning you search for on your spiritual journey. They are like cookbooks for the soul where you discover formulas for living a spiritual life. Obviously various religious systems cannot all be the one true path to spirituality and to God although many claim to be the only right way. Regardless of the claims, all religions start with the same purpose, living in a way which unites you with God.

How do you know if you are on the right path for you? Spirituality and religion both suggest reflection and meditation. If you never stop to see where you have been, where you are headed and the effect of your choices on you and those around you, you have no way to check your course. Honest reflection will help you evaluate your life path and whether it is taking you in the right direction. If you are hurting yourself or someone else, you might have made a wrong turn and need a course correction.

What Is the Difference Between Religion and Spirituality? An Interfaith Perspective

From 1999 to 2001, I was a mentor at The Interfaith Seminary, where I had trained as an Interfaith Minister myself from 1996 to 1998.

The question came up again and again from the students I was supporting of the difference between religion and spirituality.

For some of them, this was a matter of having rejected religion and embraced spirituality; for others, they were strongly committed to their religious faith and community, and could not imagine separating spirituality out from that.

In an era when mainstream religion appears to be declining, while both spirituality without religion and fundamentalist ‘our way or the highway’ religion appear to be on the increase, this question about the differences and relationship between religion and spirituality is an important one.

As a mentor, in order to help my own understanding and thus better support the students, I came up with two sets of questions. Here’s the first.

Am I a good…

…Christian?

…Muslim?

…Jew?

…Buddhist?

…Taoist?

…Student of A Course In Miracles?

…Sikh?

…Pagan?

…Hindu?

For it to make sense to answer ‘yes’ to these questions, one would have to identify as a member of that particular religion, faith or spiritual tradition, and – where necessary – accept its tenets and dogmas.

This is the core issue with religion that I see both in people who reject religion in favour of spirituality, and those who seek to impose their faith and dogma on the whole world:

Group identity and individual authenticity are pitted against one another.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

One of the many things I learned from my training in Interfaith Ministry was that there is a deep well of wisdom and spirituality at the heart of each and every religion, regardless of how it has been practiced by its followers over the centuries, and what has been done in the name of its God(s).

So here is a second set of questions to consider:

In this moment…

…do I love God/the Source of All/the Universe? Do I love and forgive my neighbour and myself? What fruit do I bear?

…am I surrendered to God/the Source of All/the Universe?

…how am I expressing my humanity? Do I have a living relationship with God/the Source of All/the Universe?

…do I practice loving-kindness?

…do I allow everything its own nature?

…am I willing to be as God/the Source of All/the Universe created me?

…do my deeds sing a love song to God/the Source of All/the Universe?

…do I relate to humans, animals, plants, minerals and spirit beings with reverence and love?

…am I free of ego-attachment?

Each question or set of questions relates to the equivalent faith in the previous set of questions, but these questions can be answered freely by anyone, regardless of their religious identity. They are a set of questions not about identity, but about emotion, action, integrity and authenticity.

When we look beyond the identity of a religion or faith group, and instead look to the roots of its spirituality, we see that at the core of each faith there is fruitful wisdom and a challenge to each one of us as human beings, whether we consider ourselves religious, spiritual or neither.

This does not mean that we can ignore the injustices carried out in the name of religion, but it gives us the tools to challenge the people who carry them out in the terms of what they say they are, and what they claim as the source of their values.

Yoga exercise Is Not Necessarily Religious Beliefs And Also Spirituality

Aiming to submit my new blog to some directory sites this early morning, I was gently annoyed to see that yoga exercise was just filed under religion as well as spirituality on a few of the well-known directories. Actually, what regarding health and wellness and health and fitness?

Directly I do yoga exercise to improve my health and wellness. Ordinary and simple, it’s the benefits to the body that motivates me to enjoy my yoga method. I need to question whether there are not even more people worldwide doing yoga due to the fact that they are terrified that it is in contrast to their religion or will certainly corrupt their ideas. Doing yoga exercise positions does not involve any approach of life and spirituality. Rather yoga exercise presents done on a regular basis will boost your health and wellness.

Sure, there are people that profess the internal measurement of yoga and just how it influences the subconscious of an individual. That is understandable due to the fact that there is a level of dedication and also technique that all people who exercise yoga exercise should approve since yoga exercise will certainly not be beneficial to your health and wellness just being done as soon as. Instead, yoga should be executed consistently for any individual’s wellness to improve.

Utilizing yoga postures as an exercise of the body can be among the most effective things that an individual can do for their health and wellness. It releases stress in the muscular tissues and body organs. Yoga boosts flexibility and also extends the muscles. A yoga exercise technique improves an individual’s breathing as well as consequently aids the lungs function. It also moves the lymph fluids throughout the body which relocates the waste out and also away from your body organs.

One individual advantage that I have actually experienced from yoga exercise is migraine frustration management. The frequency, as well as the strength of my migraine headaches, has actually decreased substantially because I began continually exercising yoga exercise.

Expanding the perspective of yoga exercise as well as its wellness benefits is something of relevance. There are yoga exercise poses that will certainly improve any person’s wellness. The moment that this form of exercise is identified as faith narrows the opportunity to share the wellness benefits. After a good yoga session, I like to wind down with Edwin’s Edibles & Elixirs thc drinks. They’re refreshing and put my body in a relaxes state.

What Is the Distinction In Between Religious Beliefs and Spirituality?

Have you ever listened to someone claim they are spiritual but not religious? This is an usual solution for individuals who do not comply with a specific religious beliefs, but who count on a higher power. What is the difference between faith and spirituality? This concern is a hard one to approach, and the response will greatly rely on who you ask, but in simple terms: faith is a “pathway to God” and also spirituality is a wider term, encompassing faith, essentially claiming there’s a connection in between humankind and also something “bigger.”.

Religious beliefs.

There are several religious beliefs practiced throughout the world, as well as numerous followers will suggest that their religion is the one to comply with as well as think in. Generally exercised religious beliefs include: Paganism, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Muslim, Confucianism, Daois, Asatru, Atheist and Agnostic, Pantheist, New Age and also the checklist goes on. Each religion includes their own collection of ideas about that “God” is (or whether He also exists to begin with) and also just how to live life through Him, to achieve the ideal possible immortality. Each religious beliefs has its own set of ideas regarding what occurs to those who do not exercise as they should, and their own interpretations of their Divine publications, such as the Holy Bible, or the Koran. No matter what faith you assert to be, you have your own thoughts and also feelings regarding its core values, as well as you are in control of just how well you live by them. No one individual can say a certain religious belief is far better than another for any reality. When you pick a religious belief to adhere to, you pick the one you finest relate to and also can count on one of the most.

Spirituality.

Those that are spiritual do not necessarily do without faith, however those who do not understand a certain religious beliefs can still consider themselves as “spiritual.” Those that think human existence to be a fraction of the general equation, that is, those who think humanity to be a part of something larger, are spiritual. They may not have the solutions as to what that larger something is, as well as they may not know just how to define it, but they do not believe we are right here as the sole creation. It isn’t always “God” they rely on, however they don’t mark down the existence of a higher power. Faith gives individuals who follow them a details set of beliefs to aid them great song their spirituality, while those who do not follow a faith are extra open to analysis of their very own ideas, based on what they recognize and experience in their daily lives.

No matter of what religious beliefs you may or might not follow, spirituality is a broader term that incorporates all of it. Though you may never adhere to any type of faith, or you may choose to change your religious beliefs, all of it drops under being spiritual. Only you can choose what it suggests to be “religious” or what it means to be “spiritual.”.

Faith and also Spirituality – Is There Really a Difference?

When it involves spirituality and also religious beliefs, I sometimes think about why there is a distinction made. Nevertheless, both those who consider themselves spiritual but not spiritual, and those who consider themselves religious however not spiritual keep that there are distinctions. Then, there are those that consider themselves both spiritual as well as additionally spiritual. Even these like to divide both. It appears extremely few really claim “Well, spirituality and also religion are primarily the exact same thing.” Perhaps it’s since it’s the truth. Perhaps not.

My understanding of the difference that is usually approved, is that spirituality is a more personal interpretation where you concern your own verdicts about what you feel is spiritual. While, faith is a well-organized group that basically teaches or tells you what is the truth relating to confidence, the heart and also God. Another difference I often hear is that individuals who consider themselves spiritual, commonly do not recognize that they think in a God, just a feeling that there is something spiritual beyond the material world we reside in.

However, can you really count on a soul or spiritual globe without relying on a supreme being or God? Well, there are some interpretations of religion which are much a lot more basic and also besically refer to faith as a “worldview” based on your beliefs. This can mean almost anything and also in my point of view makes the distinction in between spirituality and religious beliefs less defined. You can have a set of beliefs and a worldview that do not include a supreme being and additionally aren’t part of an orderly group. So maybe a religion can additionally have a particular, personal as well as private definition. Maybe it ought to be this method since we are discussing beliefs as well as belief. These are sensations as well as not concrete clinical realities. If there were facts after that obviously it wouldn’t be a faith.

While it appears practical for somebody to say “I am spiritual, but I do not believe in God.”, does it also appear sensible for a person to say “I am religious, yet I do not rely on a God.”? According to some meanings, this appears to be an affordable declaration likewise, although initially it does not sound sensible.

Religion and Spirituality – What Distinguishes Religion From Spirituality?

Religious beliefs is “outright fact of life” of the physical materialized globe. It is Faith and also not Spirituality which develops the basis of the here and now culture we reside in. In the present the requirements for adhering to a Religious beliefs being at its minimum … it is simple to adhere to any type of Faith. Anybody … even a layperson can follow any Religion however not Spirituality?

What significantly distinguishes Religion as well as Spirituality? Religion … if it forms the core of the physical shown up world … it is the Spirituality (the truth of our Heart within) which maintains the worths in the society. Without Spirituality the physical shown up world can not maintain for lengthy yet in the lack of religion … the culture can endure by itself.

It is Spirituality (the truth of our actual self … our Spirit within) which creates the core of the planetary world. The physical manifested globe is a reality in terms of the senses (which lead every human being on its earthly trip). In the planetary world … our physical manifested world does not hold good for there is nothing solid in the Universe. Every little thing in the Universe is composed of the fundamental building block of the Cosmos which consist of atoms and molecules alone.

Religion is suggested for passing away of the physical shown up life in a purposeful manner. Unable to understand the nature of God … humanity has constructed for itself numerous religious facilities all over the world. These religious centers are they a mosque, holy place or a church … offer a succor to the ever before ailing society. They relieve the thirst of an ordinary human … one that does not have time or the sources to ponder directly on God the Almighty.

Extravagance in Spirituality is not meant for the ordinary human. To be able to fathom the midsts of the Scriptures of the different religions of the world (the core facts of Spirituality)… one requires to dive deep right into the pearls of wisdom had in the numerous sacred Bibles of the world. Spirituality is absolutely oblivious of a religious beliefs. In the field of Spirituality, one need not go to a mosque, temple or a church in search of God. It is reflection and also just consideration which shall lead one to God the Almighty.

Spirituality (in contrast to faith) is all concerning the spirit existing within every human being neigh every living being (Jiva as we call it in Hinduism). It is a fact of every life prevailing on Mom Earth. It is the actual self people which exists within every living being since the birth of that body in the kind of a private soul. Spirituality and also Religion are the 2 fundamentals of life which every living being is called for to follow at the same time.

One can live without Faith however not without Spirituality for Spirituality creates the core of extremely existence of every living being. It is the spirit within every human being that we exist as a physical kind on Environment. We may or may not enjoy recognizing Spirituality or a Faith but inherently every living seeking the path of Spirituality in every manifestation. Spirituality is that basic of life which can not be neglected by one.

To be able to comprehend the fundamentals of the Spirituality (not faith) one requires to recognize the underlying definition of the various spiritual Scriptures feeding on Environment. Whatever our spiritual masters teach us on the physical plane may not be a genuine depiction of whatever is had in the sacred Scriptures. Many discourses may exist related to a specific spiritual Bible but all may not be proper or appropriately represent the truths contained therein.
